Four or five in the evening is when good intentions go to die. Lunch is a distant memory, dinner is hours away, and the packet of chips in the cupboard starts whispering your name. The problem is not snacking — it is snacking on things that leave you hungrier than before.

What makes a snack actually healthy?

Forget "low calorie" as the goal. A good evening snack has a simple formula: protein or fibre + something you enjoy eating. Protein and fibre slow digestion, steady your blood sugar and keep you full till dinner. A 200-calorie snack with protein beats a 100-calorie snack of pure starch every time.

8 snacks that satisfy

  1. Roasted makhana. Fox nuts roasted in a teaspoon of ghee with salt and pepper. Crunchy like chips, far lighter, and the roasted flavour is genuinely addictive.
  2. Sprouts chaat. Boiled moong sprouts with chopped onion, tomato, cucumber, lemon and chaat masala. Fresh, tangy and packed with protein.
  3. Vegetable sticks with hummus. Carrot, cucumber and capsicum sticks with a small bowl of hummus. The crunch satisfies the chips craving.
  4. Roasted chana. Keep a jar of roasted chickpeas spiced with chaat masala. A handful delivers protein and fibre for very few calories.
  5. Fruit with peanut butter. Apple or banana slices with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Sweet, creamy and far more filling than fruit alone.
  6. Paneer tikka bites. Cube paneer, toss with tikka masala and curd, and pan-sear. High protein, deeply satisfying, ready in 10 minutes.
  7. A small bowl of soup. Tomato, dal or vegetable soup takes the edge off hunger fast, especially on cold evenings. Warm food registers as more filling.
  8. Curd with roasted nuts. A small katori of curd topped with almonds and a drizzle of honey. Creamy, cooling and protein-rich.

Set yourself up to succeed

  • Prep on Sunday. Boil sprouts, roast a batch of makhana and chana, chop vegetables. Evening-you will not prep; morning-you must.
  • Portion first. Serve your snack in a bowl instead of eating from the packet. It is a small change with a big effect.
  • Drink water first. Thirst often disguises itself as hunger. A glass of water, wait ten minutes, then decide.
The 4 pm rule: plan your evening snack the way you plan lunch. A snack you chose deliberately is a healthy habit; a snack you grabbed in desperation is a gamble.

Healthy snacking is not about willpower — it is about availability. Keep two or three of these ready, and the chips can stay whispering.
